Cataract

Cataracts result from the clouding of an originally clear eye lens. In most cases, patients beyond 60 years of age are affected by cataracts; however, clouding may occur at younger ages.

Cataract corrective surgery is performed on a day-patient basis (optional night in single rooms). Sedation drip-anesthesia is sufficient in most patients and results in a half-sleep state. The clouded lens is removed by ultrasound (phaco emulsification) through a small incision. A foldable artificial lens is then inserted. Apart from standard intraocular lenses, toric, aspherical, blue filter and multi-focal lenses can be implanted, according to the individual's requirements.

In cases of after-cataract occurances (clouding of the remaining lens capsule) treatments with the Neodym-YAG laser can be performed painlessly.
